Glamourous Talent
If Denise Ho (HOCC) has a mission, it is probably to break down every stereotype about Cantopop.
- She doesn't need to sing sappy love songs to be popular (although she doesn't avoid singing them).
- She didn't need any major record label to incessantly push and promote her.
- She languished for years in obscurity after her New Talent victory in her teens, missed the age where new pop stars are usually promoted, and then leapfrogged them all in popularity.
- She can actually sing, believe it or not.
HOCC first proved her vocal talents in the 1996 New Talent singing competition, and was taken under the wing of the legendary Anita Mui. She would wait five years after that to release her first album, and slowly built up a following. By 2005, her Glamourous and Butterfly Lovers albums would secure her position as one of Hong Kong's premiere female singers.
HOCC is not only well-known for her talent, but also for her outgoing and playful personality (being raised in Canada can do that kind of thing to you), including her sometimes bizarre fashion sense. Not one to shy away from taboo topics, a number of her songs refer to homosexuality, leading to rampant tabloid speculation to her own sexual preferences. I suspect that, either way, she probably gets a laugh out of it all more than anything else.
