Reporting on the Levant

They might be reporting on the same story, but I really can't tell:

Xinhua: Russia hails Syrian troops' pullout from Lebanon

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Wednesday that Russia welcomes the withdrawal of all Syrian troops from Lebanon, the Itar-Tass reported.

"This important step taken by the leadership of Syria and Lebanon complies with the Taif agreement and U.N. Security Council resolution 1559," Yakovenko said.

Voice of America: President Bush Calls on Syria to Pull Its Troops Out of Lebanon

President Bush demanded that Syria withdraw its troops from Lebanon before parliamentary elections in May.

"All Syrian military forces and intelligence personnel must withdraw before the Lebanese elections for those elections to be free and fair," he said.

Meanwhile, the pendulum in Lebanon has swung back to the oppressors. I must admit that it doesn't look as great as the last example of people power: the Ukranian Supreme Court had already ordered the re-election at this point in the Orange Revolution. All is not lost, though, but whether local and outside forces of good have the political skills to overcome the current obstacles remains to be seen.
