I Like Bubbly Pop and I'm Damn Proud of It
(The English version of this entry is in the extended section.)
Last week, I read this Xiaxue entry about Chinese pop music and felt in total agreement. Although in my social sphere, most of my friends don't listen to Cantopop, but I'll listen to anything from 80s Priscilla Chan and Leslie Cheung, to 90s Vivian Chow and Karen Tong; I'll even happily enjoy Twins and Fiona Sit stuff. Of course, there's your usual fare of Hacken, Leo, Joey, Miriam, etc. And in fact, I never felt much to be embarrassed about.
But then, I had an epiphany today, because as I was shopping in the Poly Entertainment in Parker Square, I found that my musical preferences aren't that far off from those of teenage girls. As I was checking out what new Cantonese CDs were out, gangs of high school girls would dart around me, asking the salesperson if there were new Yumiko or Cookies CDs. Their musical taste, to put it simply, was crap.
Thankfully, I bought the Hacken and Joey Music is Live CD and a James Wong classics compilation, suggesting that I still have some taste in these matters.
Actually, listening to music is really a matter of making oneself happy; external standards shouldn't apply. Commerical music gets a bad rap, but I have to ask what is wrong with music that is produced with the purpose of appealing to listeners. And as for the really bad stuff, it exists only if you listen to it, right?
And some good news: Universal Music is working with Apple to bring Chinese songs onto iTunes! Maybe it's time to get that iPod, eh?
